Thai PM Anutin's UN Remarks Spark Criticism Over Border Dispute with Cambodia

Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul recently made a speech at the United Nations General Assembly, where he raised the issue of the Thai-Cambodian border dispute. However, his remarks have been met with criticism from analysts, who claim that they do not reflect the facts of the situation.

During his speech, Anutin stated that he had spoken with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet in May and that the two sides had agreed to resolve border issues through bilateral mechanisms. However, he also claimed that Cambodia had initiated compulsory conciliation proceedings under the UNCLOS mechanism.

Anutin's remarks have been described as 'contradictory' by analysts, as Cambodia has repeatedly sought negotiations with Thailand to resolve land border issues since the two countries signed their second ceasefire agreement in December 2025. Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet has made negotiations a priority, stating that even a 1% chance of reaching peace is worth pursuing.

Geopolitical analyst Nhel Rattha has described Anutin's remarks as a 'diplomatic tactic' aimed at controlling the situation and gaining political benefits both domestically and internationally. He also stated that the remarks amount to 'psychological warfare', with the goal of portraying Thailand as strong and in control of the negotiating table.

Rattha also suggested that Anutin's remarks were intended to serve domestic political interests, such as increasing his popularity among Thai nationalists and the military. Similarly, Kin Phea, director of the Institute of International Relations at the Royal Academy of Cambodia, stated that Anutin's remarks were merely rhetoric intended to make the international community believe that Thailand had shown goodwill in resolving the border dispute.

Phea also criticized Thailand's military for occupying Cambodian territory and breaching international law through the destruction and seizure of Cambodian people's homes, farmland, and other property. He stated that if Thailand truly wanted to resolve the border issue peacefully, it would send its Joint Boundary Commission working team without delay.

The border dispute between Thailand and Cambodia has been ongoing for several years, with both sides accusing each other of violating international law and breaching the terms of their ceasefire agreement. The situation remains tense, with both countries showing no signs of backing down.
