Traffic Fatalities Surge in September

At least 116 people lost their lives and 276 were injured—many seriously—in accidents on Cambodia's roads during September, according to the Ministry of Interior.

The ministry recorded 212 traffic accidents across the month, with speeding identified as the leading cause, responsible for 102 incidents.

Other significant factors included failure to give way (46 accidents), failure to keep right (24), careless turning (12), drink-driving (9), overtaking (8), failure to obey traffic signals (5), vehicle-related issues (4), drowsiness (1), and poor road conditions (1).

On a single Wednesday, eight crashes were reported, resulting in three deaths and 23 injuries, the ministry noted.

Minister of Interior Sar Sokha has ordered authorities to suspend fines for certain traffic violations during the Kan Ben and Pchum Ben holiday period. However, ministry spokesman Toch Sokhak urged the public to continue respecting traffic laws and to drive with consideration for other road users.
