Man Arrested for Placing Metal Barrier on Sihanoukville Expressway

Authorities in Kampong Speu province have arrested a suspect accused of deliberately placing a metal bar across the Phnom Penh-Sihanoukville expressway, creating a serious hazard for drivers.

The incident occurred near kilometer marker 54 on the evening of September 28. According to a statement from the Ministry of Public Works and Transport, surveillance footage captured the suspect carrying a metal bar along the passing lane before positioning it across the roadway. Multiple vehicles struck the obstruction as they traveled through the area.

The expressway operator provided security footage to police and assisted affected motorists in filing formal complaints. The ministry did not disclose specific details about the number of vehicles damaged or the extent of injuries, if any.

During September, the expressway recorded over 361,000 trips. The operator fielded 482 calls through its emergency hotline that month, with nine reports of traffic accidents, 239 requests for roadside assistance, and 234 informational inquiries.

In response to the incident, the ministry reminded all drivers to follow expressway regulations and adhere to national traffic laws. Officials emphasized the importance of maintaining safe speeds and staying in the proper direction of travel.
