China and Cambodia Mark 77 Years of Diplomatic Relations with Pledge to Deepen Partnership

A ceremonial gathering took place at the Sofitel Phnom Penh Phokeethra on September 21, as China's diplomatic mission in the Cambodian capital commemorated 77 years since the establishment of the People's Republic of China. The occasion brought together Cambodia's Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Minister Prak Sokhonn and China's envoy to Cambodia, Wang Wenbin, who both emphasized the enduring bond between their nations.

During his remarks, Ambassador Wang characterized the bilateral relationship as one between "true friends and good partners" who have weathered challenges together and celebrated successes side by side, built on a foundation of profound mutual confidence. He portrayed the connection as an unshakeable alliance that has only intensified with time.

"China stands firmly behind Cambodia's right to chart its own course forward and will continue to be among Cambodia's most dependable allies as it pursues development," Wang stated.

The ambassador further indicated China's commitment to collaborating with Cambodia on executing the strategic agreements forged by both nations' leadership, with particular focus on advancing joint initiatives such as the "Fish and Rice Corridor" and "Industrial Corridor" projects. He emphasized that both governments would persist in developing their partnership as an exemplar of a shared future community for all humanity.

Minister Sokhonn highlighted that 2026 would commemorate seven decades since the late King Father Norodom Sihanouk made his inaugural journey to China—a pivotal moment that he characterized as launching a transformative era in bilateral relations.

According to Sokhonn, consecutive generations of leadership in both countries have cultivated this connection into what is now an unbreakable alliance and wide-ranging strategic partnership, grounded in reciprocal respect, confidence, and backing for each nation's fundamental interests and territorial integrity.

The minister also expressed gratitude for China's ongoing assistance in Cambodia's advancement, especially in sectors including infrastructure development, energy production, transportation networks, and water resource administration.

Sokhonn noted that commercial exchange between the two nations had expanded from approximately $15 billion in 2024 to exceed $19 billion in 2025, while Chinese capital flowing into Cambodia had similarly maintained an upward trajectory.

He conveyed optimism that both countries would continue reinforcing their steadfast community with a common future, thereby supporting peace, stability, and economic prosperity throughout the region and globally.
