Cambodia Defeats Myanmar 1-0, Advances Toward ASEAN Cup Final

Cambodia moved one step closer to claiming their first FIFA ASEAN Cup title after securing a narrow 1-0 victory over Myanmar on Sunday evening. The result places the Kouprey in prime position to advance to the final, where they would face the Group A winners—most likely tournament hosts Hong Kong.

Head coach Koji Gyotoku has made clear his ambition: win the 2026 FIFA ASEAN Cup Division 2 and earn promotion to Division 1, where eight nations are currently competing in the upper bracket.

Division 2 features six countries split into two groups. Cambodia now sits atop Group B following their hard-fought opening win at Hong Kong's Kai Tak Sports Park.

The match proved challenging, as Myanmar deployed a defensive strategy that prioritized avoiding defeat. The visitors had already secured three points from a 2-0 win over Timor-Leste and looked content to sit deep, especially as Cambodia intensified their attacking efforts after halftime.

The breakthrough finally arrived deep into stoppage time. Substitute Sin Kakada struck in the 90th minute plus four, converting a precise pass from forward Andres Nieto to clinch all three points.

Cambodia now controls their destiny in Group B. Either a victory or a draw against Timor-Leste in their final group fixture on September 30 will guarantee passage to the final.

Meanwhile, Hong Kong leads Group A after demolishing Laos 4-0 on Sunday. They face Brunei on September 30, with Brunei coming off a 3-1 defeat to Laos.

After the match, Visakha FC midfielder Kakada could barely contain his excitement about the winning goal. "I'm extremely happy," he said. "This is our first victory, and we won it with pride. I want to tell our supporters that this goal was dedicated to all our brothers and sisters back home."
