Battambang Bridge Closed Amid Rising Floodwaters

The Samdech Kralahom Sar Kheng Bridge over the Sangkae River in Battambang city was temporarily shut to traffic on September 25 after heavy rainfall caused river levels to spike, according to provincial authorities.

Local officials warned residents—especially children and older adults—living near the river to remain vigilant as conditions remain precarious. Flooding also affected several roads and bridges in Samlot district over the weekend, with runoff from surrounding streams swelling waterways.

The provincial Department of Water Resources and Meteorology reported that a low-pressure system forming in the western Pacific intensified into Storm Surigae (designated T2626), the year’s 26th tropical cyclone. This system has amplified the southwest monsoon, bringing prolonged rainfall to much of Battambang, with Samlot bearing the brunt.

Samlot serves as a key catchment zone for the Battambang multipurpose reservoir, and rapid runoff has pushed water levels well beyond capacity. In neighboring Pailin province, rising waters have submerged multiple areas, prompting the evacuation of several households. Governor Ban Sreymom said authorities spent Friday night trying to release excess water from flood-prone zones, but risks remain high.

Residents in Steung Trang commune, Sala Krao district, and other low-lying areas near rivers and streams were advised to relocate to higher ground. Emergency and security teams are on standby around the clock to support evacuations and rescue operations.
